He got his start in the high school ranks, before moving up to the college level.
He helped make a downtrodden Montana men's basketball program respectable during his five years overseeing it.
He guided Michigan State to an NCAA championship, with Magic Johnson as his star player (1979).
He handpicked his longtime assistant Tom Izzo as his successor at Michigan State.
He genuinely cared about the sport and the players he coached, and kept in touch with many of them over the years.
