    He attended education classes at the University of Alaska-Anchorage, but did not graduate.
    He is a member of the NRA.
    He campaigned for Mayor of Anchorage for the first time in 1994 and lost.
    After opponent Ted Stevens' conviction for violating the Ethics in Government Act was overturned because of prosecutorial misconduct, the Alaskan Republican Party declared Begich's victory illegitimate because of 'improper influence from the corrupt Department of Justice' and demanded that he resign so a special election could be held.
    When he was 10, his father disappeared in a plane.
    He is a moderate Democrat.
    He was the first person from Anchorage, Alaska to serve as the mayor of the city.
    He beat long time incumbent Senator Ted Stevens in the 2008 Senate Election to become the first Democratic Sentator of Alaska since Mike Gravel in 1981.
    He is against the death penalty.
