The Resume

    (August 1, 1939-March 10, 2017)
    Born in Rockford, Iowa
American author and teacher, most well known as the author of the novel, 'The Bridges of Madison County' which was made into a hit movie starring Clint Eastwood and Meryl Streep
Also wrote 'One Good Road is Enough' (1990), 'Slow Waltz in Cedar Bend' (1993), 'Puerto Vallarta Squeeze' (1995), and 'Border Music' (1995)
BA and MA from the University of Northern Iowa and PhD from Indiana University

Why he might be annoying:

'The Bridges of Madison County' was poorly written to the point of being almost unreadable and somehow became a hit.
'Slow Waltz in Cedar Bend' was at times an almost word for word ripoff of his own 'Bridges.'
    Both books celebrate adultery.
The only other book of his to be filmed, 'Puerto Vallarta Squeeze,' was a direct to video flop.
Despite over twenty years as a college professor and over a decade as a business school dean, he was never published in a scholarly journal and never wrote or contributed to a textbook.
He put out a companion CD to 'Bridges' that consisted entirely of his own music and contained none from the movie.
The lead character in 'The Bridges of Madison County' was supposedly a photographer from National Geographic assigned to photograph bridges in Madison County, Iowa hence the title. Despite years of denying he or the assignment were real and pointing out the book was fiction, some very dumb people still contact National Geographic trying to find the article he photographed for.
The TV show Two and a Half Men once made fun of the movie version saying, 'Even Clint Eastwood doesn't call it a Clint Eastwood movie.'

Why he might not be annoying:

The movie version of 'The Bridges of Madison County' was a big hit that made a buttload of money and is one of the few books to not only be improved by being filmed but was vastly improved in the film version.
He gave over a million dollars to his alma mater/former employer, the University of Northern Iowa.
He willed his copyrights to Indiana University.
He worked his way through college as a musician.
    He has avoided personal publicity.
It seems impossible to find anyone who will say anything bad about him personally.
