    Born in Llanrhymny, Wales, United Kingdom
    Commissioned as a privateer by the governor of British Jamaica to attack Spanish shipping and settlements in the Caribbean
    Knighted (1674)
    Lieutenant Governor of Jamaica (1675-81)

Why he might be annoying:

    During an assault on Portobello, Panama, he and his men used captured Jesuits as human shields (1667).
    He regularly tortured prisoners for information.
    He and his officers were nearly killed when his ship Oxford blew up in the middle of an onboard debauch (1669).
    After seizing the capital of Panama, he ordered the city burned and its inhabitants massacred (1671).
    His tomb sank into the sea when an earthquake struck Port Royal, Jamaica (1692).

Why he might not be annoying:

    He filed a successful libel suit against the publishers of a book that portrayed him as a bloodthirsty pirate.
    He was one of the few legendary pirate captains to retire and enjoy his wealth.
    He inspired Captain Morgan's Rum.
