Author
    (May 25, 1935-September 16, 2016)
    Born in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada
Birth name is William Patrick Kinsella
Wrote the novel 'Shoeless Joe' (1982)
Wrote the short story collections 'Dance Me Outside' (1977), 'The Aligator Report' (1985), 'The Dixon Cornbelt League and Other Baseball Stories' (1993) and 'Japanese Baseball and Other Stories' (2000)
He called Canada 'a nation of docile and gutless people beset by an accountant mentality.'
He said if it wasn't for medical insurance he would move to the states. (Worrying about how much your insurance costs sounds kinda like an 'accountant mentality.')
He called writers 'an oppressed minority.'
'Shoeless Joe' was the basis for the film 'Field of Dreams.'
When Christine Lahti won an Oscar for a short film based on his story 'Lieberman in Love,' he noted 'They thanked everybody and their dog but me.' (Lahti and her co-producer took out a full page ad in Variety to apologize.)
He was hit by a car while walking (October 11, 1997), struck his head against the pavement, lost his senses of smell and taste, and found himself (as of 2009) unable to write fiction.
