After benching Reggie Jackson for lofting after a fly ball, he said of Reggie and Steinbrenner 'One is a born liar, the other a convicted one.'
In Oakland, he introduced 'Billy Ball,' a strategy he used to avoid his terrible bullpen by overusing and burning out the arms of his young pitching staff.
In an exhibition game versus the Padres, the Designated Hitter rule was not allowed, so he sent his pitcher up with a toy bat (1982).
