Military Personnel

The Resume

    (March 14, 1952- )
Born in Jersey City, New Jersey
    United States Army General
Birth Name is Martin Edward Dempsey
    Deputy Commander for U.S. Central Command (Aug. 2007 - March 23, 2008)
Acting Commander for U.S. Central Command (March 24-Oct. 30, 2008)
Commanding General for the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command (Dec. 8, 2008-Apr. 11, 2011)
    37th Chief of Staff of the Army (Apr. 11, 2011-Sept. 7, 2011)
18th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff

Why he might be annoying:

    His nickname is Marty.
He was in the same graduating class as David Petraeus.
He has a penchant for singing Irish ballads, often in unwelcome situations.
He was confirmed as Commander of the Seventh Army, but he never officially assumed the post.
His strategy to combat ISIS was critiqued as ineffectual.
He presided over the Bowe Bergdahl swap for the Taliban Five from Guantanamo Bay, and as such was at the center of the heated controversy that followed.
Senator John McCain called him 'the most disappointing chairman of the Joint Chiefs that I have seen, and I have seen many of them.'
He took a veiled shot at General Petraeus at an Atlantic Council Q&A session, saying 'If you want to get out of the military and run for office, I’m all for it. But don’t get out of the military … and become a political figure by throwing your support behind a particular candidate.'

Why he might not be annoying:

He does a killer Sinatra imitation.
He is a four-star General with a Masters in English (he wrote his thesis on Irish Literary Revival).
He was attacked for supporting a withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan.
He commanded one of the largest divisions in Army history during the first year of the Iraq War.
He received the USO's Distinguished Service Award on behalf of all military members (Dec. 7, 2011).
He is arguably the first post-Goldwater-Nichols Chairman to embody the true tenets of modern joint warfare and cybernetic counterterrorism.
He listed the Top 3 Threats facing the US as 'European Security,' 'the Threat Network from Pakistan to Boko Haram' and 'Narrowing Technological Gaps in Certain Key Areas.'
A video of him singing 'Keep Your Head Up' to the families of fallen soldiers went viral on YouTube (May 22, 2015).
The outrage from Congress at Dempsey is a little much to take considering that they had been made aware of the negotiations as early as 2011 (including Sen. McCain who spoke in favor of the deal).
He addressed the controversy, in a Facebook post, by writing 'the questions about this particular soldier's conduct are separate from our effort to recover ANY U.S. service member in enemy captivity... Like any American, he is innocent until proven guilty.' (June 3, 2014)
