    (April 10, 1904-November 6, 1941)
    Died in Berlin, Germany
Basis for the acclaimed 1947 film 'Marriage In the Shadows'
    Committed suicide at 37
He was typecast as the romantic leading man in all his films.
He was married to Jewish actress Meta Wolff, the couple avoided much of the anti-Semitic violence due to his star power.
He ignored friends' advice to leave Germany.
Joseph Goebbels demanded the couple divorce.
When Joachim refused, he was ordered into the German army. His wife and son were to be deported to a concentration camp.
Minutes before the couple were seized by the Gestapo, they sedated their young child and gassed themselves to death.
He was compared to Cary Grant.
Although he was a matinee idol, the Nazis refused to allow Joachim to promote his films unless he divorced Meta.
When he found out his wife and son were headed to a concentration camp, he demanded to go with them. The Nazis refused, of course.
Oddly, Goebbels and his wife took their own lives in a similar manner.
Gottschalk chose death over a life without his family.
