U.S. Senator
    (September 11, 1932- )
    Senator from Oregon (1968-95)
Chaired the Senate Finance Committee (1985-87)
He resigned after 29 women came forward with allegations of sexual harassment.
He threatened legal action against the Washington Post, keeping them from printing the allegations until after his 1992 re-election.
He tried to keep his diaries from being subpoenaed by hinting that they contained information that would embarrass other Senators.
When his diaries finally were subpoenaed, several entries had been removed or altered.
He gave a series of non-apologetic apologies, such as 'Am I sorry? Of course, if I did the things they said I did.'
He tried to blame his behavior on previously undisclosed alcoholism, saying, 'In some cases, I was very frankly so drunk that I cannot remember the evening.'
He tried to get firms with business before the Finance Committee to hire his ex-wife so he wouldn't have to pay her as much alimony.
By resigning before the Senate could vote to expel him, he kept his $89,000-a-year pension.
He has an unfortunate last name for someone in a sex scandal.
In the Senate, he supported women's rights, including the right to choice.
Ironically, he was one of only two Republican Senators to vote against Clarence Thomas' nomination to the Supreme Court.
When he resigned, he said he left the Senate 'not with malice, but with love,'
