    Canonized (1982)
She described herself as having been 'frivolous' in her teens.
She was rejected by the Carmelite order of nuns.
It took nearly three centuries for the Catholic Church to declare her a saint.
She established the first public school in Montreal in a former stable (1658).
She established a network of social services throughout New France that was so important that she was called 'the Mother of the Colony.'
She founded one of the first uncloistered religious orders for women in the Catholic Church.
The day after her death, a priest wrote, 'If saints were canonized as in the past by the voice of the people and of the clergy, tomorrow we would be saying the Mass of Saint Marguerite of Canada.'
