    He was exiled to the United States after protesting South Africa's apartheid policy in 1961.
    He battled alcohol addiction from the 1970s through the 1990s.
    He is divorced from vocalist Miriam Makeba, who was 7 years his senior.
    In 1999, Sugar Ray sampled 'Grazin' In the Grass' for the band's hit song 'Every Morning.'
    He's a multi-instrumentalist playing the flugelhorn, trumpet and cornet.
    His 1987 song, 'Bring Him Home,' became an anthem to free a then-imprisoned Nelson Mandela.
    He finally returned to South Africa in the 1990s when the nation's racist policies were dismantled.
    He is renowned for blending African percussion and melodies with Western instrumentation.
