    Studied physics at Harvard (1922-1925)
    Earned his Ph.D. in two years as opposed to the usual four or five
    Studied at Cambridge University (1925-1926)
    Worked at Harvard, Caltech and Berkeley
    Created the School of Theoretical Physics
    Originally had socialist leanings, but abandoned them after Stalin and Hitler signed their nonaggression pact
    Elected to the US National Academy of Sciences (1941)
    Best known for his work as leader of the US nuclear project (1942-1945)
    Died of cancer at 62
    His brother and sister-in-law were communists, which put him under suspicion during the McCarthy hearings.
    He was accused of being a communist on April 13, 1953.
    He helped develop the nuclear bomb, only to oppose the continuation of his work.
    Most of his work apart from the bomb was entirely theoretical.
    His nickname was 'Oppie.'
    In the Sting song 'I Hope the Russians Love Their Children, Too!,' he refers to the bomb as 'Oppenheimer's toy.'
    He was one of the first people to use modern quantum physics.
    Someone said that he knew so much that 'he always gave you the answer before you had time to formulate the question.'
    His work helped end World War II and probably saved countless American and Japanese lives.
    He helped shape quantum and nuclear physics.
