    (October 30, 1877-October 14, 1962)
Birth name was Irma von Starkloff
Wrote ‘The Joy of Cooking (1931)’
Her brother described her as ‘a TERRIBLE cook.’
She was an amateur who let her publisher walk all over her.
She wrote ‘Joy of Cooking’ for rich women who had to let their servants go during the Great Depression (boo hoo).
Early editions contained recipes for threatened species like sea turtle and whale.
Many critics complain that ‘Joy’ has been revised so much that it’s not even the same book anymore.
    She grew up rich.
She made fun of her daughter for being ugly.
She was a widow who spent her life savings trying to get her cookbook published, and it was a huge success.
‘The Joy of Cooking’ is now considered the classic American cookbook.
It was the first cookbook Julia Child ever used.
She used a lot of jokes in her writing (example: she said puff pastry should be made ‘the same way porcupines make love – that is, very, very carefully’).
Her husband committed suicide during the Depression.
She was skilled at cake decorating and gardening.
She has been called ‘the real Betty Crocker.’
