The Resume

    (December 23, 1946- )
    Born in Brooklyn, New York
    Birth name was Robert Dupuis
    Singer and guitarist
Recorded the singles ‘Steal Away’ and ‘Hot Rod Hearts’ (both 1980)

Why he might be annoying:

The Los Angeles Times described his biggest hit, ‘Steal Away,’ as ‘a blatant, wimpy rip-off of the Michael McDonald/Kenny Loggins composition ‘What a Fool Believes.’’
His explanation for contributing a song to ‘The Wrestling Album II’: ‘I didn’t really want to, but I thought, ‘No one is ever going to hear this, so fuck it. I’m going to get paid good money and it’ll vanish.’’
VH-1 included him in their ‘100 Greatest One-Hit Wonders of the 80s’ countdown even though ‘Steal Away’ and ‘Hot Rod Hearts’ both made Billboard’s top 20.

Why he might not be annoying:

His biggest influences were Sam Cooke and Marvin Gaye.
In the early 70s he was in the band New World Rising, along with future Chic guitarist Nile Rodgers.
He enjoyed a career resurgence with the revival of interest in late 70s/early 80s adult-oriented rock under the label ‘yacht rock.’
