    He falsely claimed to have a PhD from Rhodes University in South Africa.
    He faked a reference from an Oxford professor to get a job in the US.
    One of his classmates from medical school said, 'He was a real Walter Mitty kind of character and he would tell these enormous, awful lies.'
    His attorney commented, 'If puffing on your resume made you the anthrax killer, then half this town should be suspect.'
    FBI agents trailing him accidentally ran over his foot (May, 2003).
    Police did not cite the driver but instead issued a $5 ticket to Hatfill for 'walking to create a hazard.'
    His lawyer said, 'Steve's life has been devastated by a drumbeat of innuendo, implication and speculation.'
