Why he might be annoying:

He debuted as 'Little Cowboy Charlie,' a two-year-old yodeler in his family's country music act.
He had to leave Ornette Coleman's band because of his heroin addiction (1960).
He closed his eyes when he played.
He was unusually sensitive to loud noises and had to play behind a plexiglass divider when sharing the stage with a drummer.
He constantly peppered his sentences with the word 'man.'

Why he might not be annoying:

He had to give up singing after contracting polio in his teens, which affected the muscles of his face and throat and left him unable to control his pitch.
Pianist Paul Bley said, 'He had perfect time -- that's rare.'
He won Down Beat's critics poll as best acoustic bassist twelve consecutive years (1987-98).
He was detained by the Portuguese military junta after he dedicated a performance of 'Song for Che' to anti-colonial rebels in Angola and Mozambique (1971).
He performed with everyone from John Coltrane and Art Pepper to Yoko Ono and Beck.
He said, 'I always dreamed of an America worthy of the dreams of Martin Luther King and the majesty of the Statue of Liberty.'
