The Resume

    (September 25, 1989- )
    Born in Greenwood, Missouri
    Aldon Jacarus Smith
Outside Linebacker for San Francisco 49ers (2011-2014)
Attended the University of Missouri from 2008 to 2010
Signed with The Oakland Raiders, in Sept. 2015
    Received a one-year suspension as a penalty for multiple drunk-driving offenses (Nov. 17, 2015)
Detained by San Francisco police on suspicion of driving under the influence several months after re-signing with the Raiders, raising questions about his future with the NFL (Mar. 9, 2017)

Why he might be annoying:

He liked to run back to the bench after doing his viral post-sack victory dances.
Casual observers say he's his own worst enemy off-the-field (to put it mildly).
He was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and possession of marijuana (2013).
He was detained and arrested following an incident at a Los Angeles Airport, after reportedly claiming to be 'carrying a bomb' (2014).
Although the misdemeanor for the incident was later dropped, it cost him a nine-game suspension for the season.
The last straw appeared to be after he was arrested in Santa Clara for a DUI/hit-and-run, coupled with a vandalism charge, in 2015. He was promptly released by the Niners as a result.
Around the same time, reports circulated about an alleged on-field altercation he had with then-Quarterback Colin Kaepernick (which some claimed was the real cause for his 'release').
The extent to which their 'fight' escalated, or the exact reasons for it, remain unclear, although TMZ theorized that it broke out over Kaepernick's dating his ex-girlfriend radio personality Nessa.
He managed to secure a deal with the Oakland Raiders within a month, scoring a total of 28 tackles and 3 sacks while the NFL deliberated over how to respond to his third DUI arrest (eventually hitting him with the one-year suspension).
He posted a live Periscope video of himself smoking Marijuana during his one-year suspension, and then tried to claim it wasn't him in the video (he used a nickname, but he practically identified himself in the video).
The uproar over the video appeared to be the last straw for most, with Stephen A. Smith saying that he deserved to be 'banned for life' from the NFL 'for stupidity.'

Why he might not be annoying:

His professional mentor, coming out of college and into his rookie season, was Hall of Famer Charles Haley.
He cited playing with Niners veterans NaVorro Bowman and Justin Smith as a highlight in his career.
He was an active volunteer with the Boys and Girls Club of America (a program he benefited from as a kid in Missouri).
Tim Brown said in an interview that he still had the capacity 'to be great' given the proper guidance.
In his first two seasons, he racked up a combined 33.5 sacks, the most in NFL history over that span, drawing comparisons to DeMarcus Ware.
His performance was enough to rank him Seventh in the NFL Network's Top 100 Players of 2013, making him the second highest-ever debutant to make the list, and the second highest defensive player after J.J. Watt.
He sustained stab wounds when attempting to break up a fight at a party at his residence (Jun. 30, 2012).
Some have argued that he may be nursing a form of mental illness that hindered his sustainability in the League.
Just as many argued that the NFL - by failing to take his alcoholism seriously at its start - held some shared responsibility (they waited until he hit rock bottom to hit him with a year's suspension).
Several of his ex-college teammates came to his defense, with calling him 'a great dude' and another professing to be confused because 'the real Aldon wouldn't do [those things].'
He commented on his legal issues and his desire to improve, saying: 'I think the lesson I've learned is I'm a football player, and I represent a lot more than just myself [and] I have a lot of people that look up to me, and they have a lot of faith in me. It's important that I remember that everywhere I go and in all the decisions that I make.'
