    The lower case 'a' at the beginning of 'arap' ain't a typo.
    Africa Watch accused his government of torture and gross human rights abuses (1991).
    A Kenyan economist explained the difference between him and his predecessor by noting, 'Under Kenyatta, a spending project would be approved because it was a smart project and then it would be padded. Under Moi, there were a number of projects that would not and should not have been approved except for corruption.'
    He, his family and cronies used a web of shell companies and secret trusts to siphon billions of dollars from the country.
    When he stepped down, he left a country with a stagnant economy, fast-rising crime, heavy debts and a collapsing infrastructure.
    The BBC noted that he was 'always immaculately dressed.'
    During his rule, Kenya avoided the warfare and genocide that wracked many of its neighbors.
    Under international pressure, he restored a multi-party system to Kenya, in the face of fervent opposition from other members of the ruling elite (1991).
    His successor, Mwai Kibaki, appointed him as special peace envoy to the Sudan, based on his 'vast experience and knowledge of African affairs.' (2007)
