    (March 7, 1927-November 1, 1982)
    Born in Charlestown, New Hampshire
Portrayed Officer Ernie Brenner in 'Brenner' (1959-64) and Doug Lawrence in 'Family' (1976-80)
Appeared in the films 'Alice's Restaurant' (1969), 'The Taking of Pelham One Two Three' (1974) and 'Dog Day Afternoon' (1975)
Appeared on Broadway in 'Maggie' (1953), 'A View from the Bridge' (1957), 'Johnny No-Trump' (1967) and 'Let Me Hear You Smile' (1973)
    Father of Matthew Broderick
He ended up better remembered as Matthew's dad than for his own acting.
He looked older than his age, leading to his typecasting as authority figures. (In contrast to his son, who looked like a teenager in his 30s.)
He died a year too soon to witness his son's rise to stardom in 'War Games' and Broadway's 'Brighton Beach Memoirs.'
He served in the Navy during WWII.
He and Helen Hayes starred in a production of 'The Glass Menagerie' that toured Europe and the Middle East under the auspices of the US State Department (1961).
He told Matthew after an unsuccessful audition, 'You always say you messed up. Why does it not occur to you that they might have messed up? Maybe you were the best one but they didn't recognize it.'
Matthew and wife Sarah Jessica Parker named their first child James in his honor.
