    Mayor of Utica, New York (1842-1843)
    Governor of New York (1853-1854, 1863-1864)
    Democratic presidential candidate (1868)

Why he might be annoying:

    He became a leading opponent in the North of President Abraham Lincoln.
    He opposed Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation, calling it unconstitutional.
    He was accused by some as being sympathetic to the Confederate cause.
    He was defeated by Ulysses Grant in his bid for the presidency (1868).

Why he might not be annoying:

    As governor, he vetoed a Prohibition bill (1853).
    During the Civil War, he pledged his support to the Union despite disliking Lincoln.
    He favored a volunteer army, as opposed to federal drafts.
    He helped remove the corrupt Boss William Tweed from power.
