    His middle name? Theophilus.
At first he trained exclusively in classical.
While he lists Oscar Peterson – whose sister was one of his earliest instructors – as an inspiration, he spent much of his early career in the guy’s shadow (‘playing with him is like holding onto a tiger’).
More significant, they never appeared onstage together until the finale of the 25th Montreal Jazz Festival (at the time, he took part in all but the very first edition).
Because he considered it repetitious and lacking in development potential, he was not a fan of the bebop style.
He also regarded Bach and Chopin as influences.
His father, also named Oliver, had a fairly straightforward middle name: Wesley.
He was able to play the piano by ear at age three.
In late 1980, he formed a highly successful partnership with another local musician who would become a legend in his own right.
He was a teacher at McGill University and at Laurentian University — during the same time frame.
His music was featured in the animated short ‘Black Soul (2002).’
He continued to perform occasionally into the new millennium, but never retired completely.
