    (January 9, 1901-March 14, 1973)
    Born in Chicago, Illinois
Birth name was Murat Bernard Young
Created the comic strip ‘Blondie’ (1930)
He got ‘Chic’ from his high school nickname ‘Chicken.’
He worked as a postal clerk and stenographer before taking up cartooning professionally.
He turned down a $10,000 a year offer from King Features, thinking it was a joke by a fellow cartoonist.
He drew a series of ‘flapper’ strips, including ‘Beautiful Bab,’ ‘Dumb Dora,’ and, in its early years, ‘Blondie.’
In later years, he employed a number of assistant artists and gag writers without crediting them.
He managed one of the few successful comic strip reboots when flapper Blondie Boopadoop and playboy Dagwood Bumstead fell in love and married, only for Dagwood’s millionaire parents to disinherit him, forcing him to become a working stiff (1934).
Dagwood and Blondie shared a double bed at a time when movies showed married couples in twin beds.
After his son Wayne died of diphtheria (1937), he had to take a year’s hiatus from the strip, since the experience made it too painful to draw the Bumsteads’ infant son, Alexander.
When Blondie and Dagwood had a daughter, over 400,000 readers wrote in with suggestions for the child’s name.
King Features President Joseph Connelly called him ‘the greatest story teller of his kind since the immortal Charles Dickens.’
