    He started as ukulele player before switching to guitar.
    He was a teen idol.
    His first album had the punning title 'Wilde About Marty.'
    He never cracked the US Top 40.
    In the 70s he tried unsuccessfully to relaunch his career as a glam rocker named Zappo.

    Justin Hayward of the Moody Blues was a member of his backing band and credited Wilde with teaching him a great deal about music.
    He became a successful songwriter, penning his own biggest hit, 'Bad Boy,' and daughter Kim's breakthrough hit, 'Kids in America.'
    He said about post-fame life, 'I'm happy writing songs and playing a game of golf.'
