    Appeared in the films ‘Room at the Top’ (1959), ‘Live Now, Pay Later’ (1962), ‘Children of the Damned’ (1964), ‘Repulsion’ (1965), ‘The Hill’ (1965), ‘Get Carter’ (1971), ‘Tales from the Crypt’ (1972), ‘Theatre of Blood’ (1973), ‘Captain Kronos: Vampire Hunter’ (1974), ‘The Passenger’ (1975), and ‘McVicar’ (1980)
    He was the original lead in ‘The Avengers,’ but quit when the first season was cut short by a writers’ strike.
    He was married three times, divorced twice.
    He was jealous of and openly hostile to Michael Caine during the filming of ‘Get Carter.’
    He went bankrupt, owing £35,000 in back taxes (1980).
    He died of a gastrointestinal hemorrhage caused by years of heavy drinking.
    At Culford School, he captained the cricket and rugby teams.
    He was twice nominated for BAFTA Awards: as Most Promising Newcomer to Films (1962) and as Best Supporting Actor (for ‘Get Carter’).
    Judi Dench called him ‘a born actor.’
