    Argued the winning side in the Supreme Court case Bush v. Gore that decided the 2000 election
    US Solicitor General (2001-04)
    While serving as Assistant Attorney General, he was investigated by a special counsel over whether he committed perjury concerning EPA documents being sought by Congress.
    He advised Paula Jones's legal team and Kenneth Starr and served on the board of 'American Spectator' magazine which accepted $2 million from Richard Mellon Scaife to dig up dirt on the Clintons.
    He was twice considered for the Supreme Court but was passed over in favor of John Roberts and Sam Alito.
    He was considered for Attorney General to succeed Alberto Gonzales but was not nominated in the face of overwhelming Democratic opposition.
    Harry Reid said, 'He is a partisan, and the last thing we need as an attorney general is a partisan.'
    Harvard professor Laurence Tribe, who had argued against him in Bush v. Gore, supported his nomination as Solicitor General.
    His first year as Solicitor General he won every case he argued before the Supreme Court.
    On his 61st birthday, his wife Barbara was killed when American Airlines Flight 77 was crashed into the Pentagon.
