    (August 9, 1909-August 26, 1944)
    Born in Potsdam, Germany
Served in the German Foreign Office
Participant in the July 20 Plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler
Was to have been named Secretary of State had the plot succeeded
His sister Vera described him as 'mocking, negative, suspicious, bitter and depressed.'
He was hypersensitive to criticism of Germany by foreigners, leading him to respond to an article in the Manchester Guardian denouncing Nazi antisemitism with a letter to the editor denying that Jews were being discriminated against.
He was unsuccessful in persuading Britain and the US to provide support to the German resistance movement.
If the plot had succeeded, one of his duties would have been presenting the US and Britain with a list of the new government's terms for an armistice, including: Germany keeping control of Austria, the Czech Sudetenland, Danzig and the Polish corridor; no occupation of Germany by the Allies; no war crime trials by the Allies; and Germany would be free to continue its war in the East with the Soviets.
When he was in college, a friend said he was 'as beautiful as a young god.'
He was a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford.
He tried to convince the British government to abandon its appeasement policy towards Hitler.
During a trip abroad, friends urged him not to return to Germany, but he believed he had to try to stop Hitler and his followers.
He was one of several conspirators who Hitler ordered 'hanged like cattle.'
