He changed his name from Hubert to Rudy in honor of saxophonist Rudy Wiedoft.
He was discharged from the Navy for being under age (he was fifteen).
He married four times.
He was difficult to work with and reportedly engaged in fist fights with people who agitated him.
He passed on Barbra Streisand for his show, feeling she had no talent.
Later in life, he narrated Grimm's Fairy Tales.

He is credited with introducing the vocal styling known as crooning.
He played the saxophone, clarinet and drums.
He was one of the first radio hosts to feature African-American guests on his program.
He was a Lieutenant in the Coast Guard and directed the Coast Guard band.
