He pronounced his name ‘Bartle Me.'
His books are intensely strange.
He wrote one story as a single run-on sentence, another as an itemized list, another as a series of rhetorical questions, etc.
Some find his writings pretentious.
One critic called his books ‘a gold mine for the serious student of rubbish.'
He dropped out of college.
He was an alcoholic.
He wrote a novel in which Snow White has sex with the Seven Dwarfs.
A writer for ‘Harper's' magazine accused him of planning the public beating of Dan Rather (1986).

Why he might not be annoying:

He is considered one of the great post modernist writers.
He served in the Korean War (although it ended the day he got there).
He was a successful journalist.
The ‘Harper's' writer admitted he probably didn't plan the beating of Dan Rather after all.
