The Resume

    (February 25, 1885-February 20, 1966)
U.S. Naval Fleet Admiral in the Pacific during WW II

Why he might be annoying:

He dropped out of high school to join the Naval Academy.
The loss of one fourth of all U.S. Navy submarines in WW II can be blamed on Nimitz' underestimating of Japanese submarine capability.
He wanted to have a massive invasion of the Japanese mainland, supported by an enormous Naval fleet. If his plan had been used, the Allied casualties would have been 10 times worse than the D-Day invasion of Europe.
He was obsessed with warships or 'big ships' as he called them, and wanted hundreds built for the U.S. Navy, even though aircraft carriers were already making them obsolete.
His childhood home in Fredricksburg is now an antique store.

Why he might not be annoying:

He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy, seventh in a class of one hundred and fourteen.
He served on many submarines during WW I.
He was heavily involved with various U.S. Navy submarine programs.
If he had not had resources diverted to the Pacific in 1942 to start an offensive battle against Japan, the war might have lasted longer.
One of his sayings about the U.S. Navy was 'It is the function of the Navy to carry the war to the enemy so that it will not be fought on U.S. soil.'
He was one of the few people that got along well with Douglas MacArthur.
After WW II, he helped establish good relations with Japan.
He did a number of goodwill gestures for the United Nations during the early 1950s.
Although he dropped out of high school, he got his diploma years later in the 1950s.
He devoted his entire life to the U.S. Navy.
