Why he might be annoying
He was manic-depressive.
During location filming for 'Picnic,' he yelled at the cast, 'It's got to look like Kansas, and it will if I have to kill every last one of you!'
Although he co-wrote 'South Pacific,' when it won a Pulitzer Prize for Best Drama, inititally the prize was only given to Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein.
He said, 'My name had been so minimized that I lived through years of having people praise 'South Pacific' in my presence without knowing I had had anything to do with it.'
He ended his film career with the critical and box office flops 'Camelot' and 'Paint Your Wagon,' which one critic described as so dismal 'that they offer an oblique reminder that Logan was, at the other end of his mania, a famous depressive.'
Why he might not be annoying
When he was three, his father committed suicide.
He won a scholarship to study in Moscow with Constantin Stanislavski.
He served as a public relations and intelligence officer for the Army during WWII.
As a writer, director and producer, he won seven Tony Awards.
He said, 'When people tell me the direction was wonderful, I know I've failed. The audience should be entranced, hypnotized, transported like children listening to a fairy tale. The individual actor, playwright, or director who breaks the spell by drawing attention to himself and crowing 'See how clever I am!' is a crook.'
