Why they might be annoying
They adopted their band name from a region of the land of Mordor in Tolkien's 'Lord of the Rings' series.
They adhere to the standard black metal aesthetic; corpse paint, spiked outfits, adopting goofy monikers, and incorporating overblown Satanic themes into their music.
They once got in trouble during a show in Cracow, Poland (the birthplace of Pope John Paul II) for slaughtering sheep onstage and simulating mock crucifixions.
They have been plagued by constant lineup changes since they first formed.
Vocalist Gaahl was fined and sentenced to fourteen months in prison for allegedly beating and torturing a man.
Guitarist Infernus has been accused of rape.
Why they might not be annoying
They play a traditional form of brutal, no-frills black metal reminiscent of the Norwegian black metal scene of the early 90s.
They have experimented with their sound by adding industrial and ambient elements to their music.
They were featured on VH-1's '100 Most Metal Moments' for their incident in Cracow.
