Why they might be annoying
As the Kansas City Scouts, they lost their first game, 6-2 to Toronto Maple Leafs (October 9, 1974).
They play in New Jersey.
During their Stanley Cup victory party, it was strongly hinted they were leaving New Jersey (June 28, 1995). They eventually announce they were staying in New Jersey (October 31, 1995).
Their Stanley Cup Victory Party was held in the parking lot of their arena which is in the middle of a swamp area.
When the Edmonton Oilers beat them, 13-4, Wayne Gretzky called the Devils 'a Mickey Mouse organization' (December 9, 1992).
Coach Jim Schoenfeld was suspended after telling referee Don Koharski to 'eat another doughnut you fat pig! (May 6, 1988).'
The Devils got a restraining order against NHL referees, so the refs refused to work the May 8th Devils playoff game against the Bruin. The entire incident was referred to as doughnutgate.
