The Resume

    (January 22, 1875-July 21, 1948)
Directed 'Birth of a Nation' (1915) 'Intolerance' (1916), 'Broken Blossoms' (1919), 'Orphans of The Storm' (1922), 'Battle of the Sexes' (1928) and 'The Struggle'
Established United Artists with Charlie Chaplin, Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks (1920)
Featured on a U.S. commemorative postage stamp (1975)
Filmed over 500 short films before 'Birth of a Nation'
Birth name is David Wark Griffith
Son of a Confederate Army colonel and Civil War hero (hence his racist point of view)
Namesake for the D.W. Giffith award - the most prestigious award handed out by the Directors Guild of America (discontinued in December, 1999, due to his racist storytelling)

Why he might be annoying:

He was a blatant racist and sympathized with the Ku Klux Klan.
By 1931, most of his films were failures, so he retired.
During his reign of failures, he continued to make depressing films, something movie goers weren't quite ready for (His last film, 'The Struggle' was a chilling story about alcoholism).
He once predicted 'There will never be talking pictures,' then directed his first in 1930 ('Abraham Lincoln')
    He smoked.
    He became an alcoholic.

Why he might not be annoying:

He directed the first epic film (2 hours 45 minutes), 'Birth of a Nation' (1915).
It is believed that after making the racist 'Birth of a Nation,' he may have looked inwardly and did not like seeing his racist nature (1915).
His answer was 'Intolerance,' which - in four different historic stories - tells of people who are intolerant to others (1916).
He created filming techniques like interweaving stories, casting hundreds of extras, film masking and flashback.
He is considered the pioneer of motion picture making.
