Why he might be annoying:

He got his first car three years before he got a license.
He recycled the name 'Spirit of America' for each of his cars.
When neighbors complained about the noise from testing the jet engines for his cars, he would blithely respond, 'It's my hobby.'
He set an unintended record during one wipeout when he left behind the world's longest skidmarks -- five miles.
His plans in the late 80s to break the sound barrier with a new rocket-powered Spirit had to be cancelled because of new government regulations on the chemicals in rocket fuel.
The day his second divorce became official, he married his third wife. That marriage fell apart in two weeks.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was described by Sports Illustrated as having 'the elfin good looks and shaggy hair of a pop-rock star.'
His Spirit of America cars have been called some of the most beautiful ever built.
His second wife, Lee, set the women's land speed record (308.5 mph in 1965), making them the world's fastest couple.
He and his cars inspired the Beach Boys song 'Spirit of America.'
A young George Lucas worked as a cameraman filming his record-setting runs, and later paid tribute to them with the pod race from 'The Phantom Menace.'
