    Acted in 'The Hospital (1971),' 'The Terminal Man (1974),' 'The Crazy World of Julius Vrooder (1974),' 'The Hindenburg (1975),' 'The Day of the Locust (1975),' 'An Enemy of the People (1978),' 'Prophecy (1979),' 'Meteor (1979),' 'Being There (1979),' 'The Thing (1982),' 'The Falcon and the Snowman (1985),' 'Mask (1985),' 'Pale Rider (1985),' 'Wall Street (1987),' 'Back to the Future Part III (1990),' 'Panther (1995)' and 'Hard Rain (1998)'
    He was typecast as playing mostly authority figures, including J. Edgar Hoover twice, Harry S. Truman twice, Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower twice, and no less than eight doctor roles (plus a lawyer in 'L.A. Law').
    He switched his credits between Richard Dysart and Richard A. Dysart.
    He provided 'additional voices' for the cartoon series 'The Smurfs.'
    He was nominated and lost the Emmy 3 times in a row for his Leland McKenzie role (1989-91).
    He is a graduate of Boston's Emerson College.
    He served four years in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War.
    He was in Broadway productions of 'That Championship Season,' 'The Little Foxes' and 'A Man for All Seasons.'
    He was a founding member of the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco.
    He had a pretty cool death scene in John Carpenter's 'The Thing,' losing his arms to the creature while manning defibrillator paddles (playing a doctor naturally).
    He won the Emmy (for his Leland McKenzie role) on his fourth try (1992).
