Why he might be annoying:

His father, Archibald, owned a cigar shop.
He was a pragmatist.
He taught high school for two years in a town named 'Oil City.'
He and Bertrand Russell had a famous feud over the nature of pragmatism, with neither side fully understanding the other's position.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was able to finish high school in only three years.
His goal in life was '[to achieve] a moderately clear and distinct idea of what the problems are that underlie the difficulties and evils which we experience in fact; that is to say, in practical life.'
He wrote 40 books and published over 700 articles.
He attempted to unite philosophy and psychology.
He worked diligently to reform education, stressing that students should learn through hands on methods, rather than being yelled at and forced to memorize facts without context.
He took part in the 'Commission of Inquiry into the Charges Against Leon Trotsky at the Moscow Trial' and helped to expose the atrocities committed by Joseph Stalin.
Even though he feuded with Bertrand Russell, he came to Russell's defense when religious and conservative groups tried to have Russell removed from his teaching post at the College of the City of New York in 1940.
