The Resume

    (October 3, 1889-May 4, 1938)
    Born in Hamburg, Germany
Editor-in-chief of the magazine Die Weltbuhne
Published a series of articles revealing a secret German rearmament program that violated the Treaty of Versailles
Convicted of treason and sentenced to 18 months in prison (1931)
Released in a Christmas amnesty (1932)
Received the Nobel Peace Prize (1935)

Why he might be annoying:

He left high school without graduating.
His win pissed off the Nazi regime to the point that they would force later Nobel Prize winners (such as Gerhard Domagk) to turn down the award.
The Federal Court of Justice upheld his conviction on the grounds that the state secrecy laws in effect in 1931 were not negated by the fact that the activity being kept secret was illegal (1992).

Why he might not be annoying:

After the Nazis took power, he was arrested and thrown into a concentration camp (1933).
While incarcerated, he was tortured, deprived of food, and forced to perform heavy labor after suffering a heart attack.
A Red Cross representative who visited the camp described him as having ‘one eye swollen, teeth knocked out, dragging a broken, badly healed leg.’
His lawyer embezzled most of the money from his Nobel Prize.
His Nobel Prize victory brought enough international attention that he was released from the concentration camp and allowed to move to a private sanitarium (albeit under Gestapo surveillance).
He died from a combination of tuberculosis and the effects of the abuse he suffered.
