He was a member of the Communist Party.
He was one of the original 'Hollywood Ten,' a group of prominent Hollywood screenwriters and directors who refused to testify before the House Un-American Activities Committee in 1947.
His Oscar for the screenplay for 'Roman Holiday' was awarded to Ian McClellan Hunter, a fellow writer who fronted for him.
His Oscar for the story of 'The Brave One' was awarded to Robert Rich, a pseudonym.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was blacklisted.
He served a prison sentence rather than compromise his principles.
The blacklist was finally lifted when Kirk Douglas gave him screen credit for 'Spartacus.'
The Writers Guild of America ultimately gave him full credit for the films that he wrote under a pseudonym.
