    While he worked as an actor at Priscilla Beach Theatre in 1953, he was told by the director that he had to get rid of his Canadian accent.

    He was a witness to John F. Kennedy, Jr.'s assassination.
    He was the original host of the news and affairs program 'Washington Week.'
    His various specials covering the Watergate scandal earned him journalistic credibility.
    It also convinced PBS executives to have him start hosting their new nightly national newscast.
    He became a US citizen in 1997.
    That same year, he was honored as an Officer of the Order of Canada for his work in journalism.
