Murderer (Alleged)
    (July 9, 1987- )
    Born in Seattle, Washington
Charged with sexual assault and first degree murder (October 30, 2008) in aiding assistance in the death of British exchange student, Meredith Kercher
Convicted on seven of eight counts of murder (December 4, 2009)
Murder convictions overturned, resulting in her being set free (October 3, 2011)
Italian high court overturned her acquittal and demanded new trial (March 26, 2013)
New trial upheld original verdict; Knox sentenced to 28 years (January 30, 2014)
Acquitted by Italian Supreme Court (March 27, 2015)
Like the trial of Casey Anthony, her murder trial became a media circus and dominated news headlines.
She was accused in aiding and helping covering up her boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito, and fellow student Rudy Guede's murder of Knox's flatmate Kercher.
While being interrogated by the police, she 'confessed' that she was in the same flat where she could her Kercher screaming.
After her arrest the following day, she tried to retract those statements.
Police evidence alleged that Knox and Sollecito ransacked the flat Kercher and Knox were staying in.
A judge's report compiled in 2010 found that Knox and Sollecito had consumed hashish and had been reading sexually explicit and violent comics collected by Sollecito, which were alleged to have influenced their behavior.
The report also stated that Knox and Sollecito had stabbed Kercher in the neck using two different knives, and that after the murder, they had covered the body with a duvet in an act of repentance.
There were reports that before trial sessions, Knox did cartwheels. The Italian media pointed out that it seemed that she had no remorse for her actions.
She was a University of Washington student studying Italian, German, and creative writing while staying in Italy.
Many legal analysts in America, complained that there was an anti-American sentiment that tainted the results of the trail.
Fox News commentator Ann Coulter criticized that the evidence in the trial was misguided.
Author Candace Dempsey, in her book Murder in Italy, lists a number of examples of what she calls falsehoods and distortions in the press reports about the case.
An independent council in Idaho named Innocence Project found that based on evidence and review, Knox was innocent.
