Why they might be annoying:

They were accused by fellow leftists of ‘selling out' because they did not record the more overtly political songs in their repertoire.
Folk purists objected to their use of strings and brass on songs like ‘Goodnight Irene.'
Anti-Communist protests outside their concerts became so frequent they had trouble getting bookings.
They took credit for writing the song ‘Wimoweh' (which later became the hit ‘The Lion Sleeps Tonight') even though it was a version of the song ‘Mbube' written by South African Solomon Linda.

Why they might not be annoying:

They were victims of the McCarthy-era blacklist, which led to their original break-up.
Their 1955 reunion at Carnegie Hall occurred only because the Hall's management was unaware of the controversy surrounding the group.
They set the stage for the folk music revival of the early 1960s.
Carl Sandburg wrote, ‘When I hear America singing, the Weavers are there.'
When they received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Grammies (2006), Hellerman said, ‘You can outlast your enemies with your honor and your dignity intact.'
