Entrepreneur
    (December 18, 1947-September 10, 2016)
Born in New York, New York
Founded the Crazy Eddie electronics chain (1971)
Company was known for its commercials starring Jerry Carroll
Plead guilty to federal fraud charges (1996)
He specialized in bait-and-switch tactics, advertising great deals but having high-pressure salesmen steer customers to pricier items.
He paid many employees off the books.
He and his relatives skimmed an estimated $3-4 million cash from the stores each year at the height of the company's success.
With the help of his accountant nephew, he engaged in a massive money-laundering scheme to inflate store sales.
Prosecutor Michael Chertoff called him 'the Darth Vader of capitalism.'
An attempt by his grandchildren to revive the chain went bankrupt (2004).
If you could ignore the sales people, you could find some good deals.
The store commercials with their 'His prices are insane!' catchphrase became a radio and TV staple.
The commercials were parodied by everyone from Saturday Night Live and Futurama to Howard the Duck.
