    Born to a Scottish father and Jamaican mulatto free woman
    Known by British troops as 'Mother Seacole'
    Published her autobiography called 'The Wonderful Adventures of Mrs. Seacole in Many Lands'
    She was a little on the hefty side.
    She could not manage her finances.
    She didn't have an official license to practice medicine.
    Why would she help people who didn't like her because of the color of her skin?
    The British War Office rejected her assistance in the Crimean War because of her race.
    She went to Crimea at her own expense with medical supplies and food to assist the troops.
    She built and ran a hotel/hospital in Crimea for British troops.
    Florence Nightingale accused the hotel of being 'no better than a brothel.'
    White Americans mistreated her in Panama, even though she came to help during a cholera epidemic.
    She used old African remedies to treat the soldiers and they worked.
    She is listed as #1 on an online poll of '100 Greatest Black Britons.'
