Organization
    (1871-1875)
Formal name is the National Association of Professional Baseball Players
Teams included the Boston Red Stockings, Chicago White Stockings, New York Mutuals, Philadelphia Athletics, Brooklyn Atlantics, Baltimore Canaries and Washington Nationals
It was severely disorganized and poorly managed.
Boston won its last four championships, which were mostly credited to buying the other teams' stars.
It was riddled with drunkenness, fixed games and violence.
Five different teams had 'Stockings' in their nickname.
Most baseball historians don't recognize it as a 'major' league.
It was the first professional baseball league.
Six of its teams formed the core of what would be baseball's first major league, the National League.
Any team could join the league simply by paying $10.
The Atlanta Braves (formerly the Boston Red Stockings) and the Chicago Cubs (Chicago White Stockings) trace their origins to the league.
