    Notorious for flaking out on gigs, Duke Ellington fired him.
    He was known for his upbeat personality.
    He innovated the use of the trumpet's 'wah-wah' sound and plunger mute.
    As the only black in an otherwise all-white band, he was forced to hide behind a screen or clad himself as an usher when playing.
