    Born in Buffalo, New York
    Birth name was Robert Emil Schmidt
    Host and co-creator of 'The Howdy Doody Show'
    Recorded the album 'Buffalo Bob Smith Live at Fillmore East' (1971)
    Wrote the autobiography 'Howdy and Me' (1990)

Why he might be annoying:

    Despite suffering a near-fatal heart attack from overwork, he agreed to let NBC build a studio at his home so he could still do the commercials for 'The Howdy Doody Show' during his recovery (1954).
    He made his last public appearance a month before his death to hawk Howdy Doody memorabilia on the QVC shopping channel.
    After his death, a legal battle over custody of the Howdy Doody puppet broke out between his family and the Detroit Institute of the Arts.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He was married to Mildred Metz for 57 years until his death.
    Before going into television, he was member of the vocal group the Hi-Hatters, which opened for Kate Smith.
    A decade after the show went off the air, he and Howdy Doody made a successful tour of college campuses (1970-71).
    Asked in Boston if Howdy ever smoked pot, he joked, 'He tried it, but it stunted his growth.'
    His road manager noted, 'The truth is he never realized the success and what a role he played in our lives until we went out and did the college tour.'
