U.S. Governor
    (January 17, 1931- )
    Born in Richmond, Virginia
Birth name was Laurence Douglas Wilder
    Virginia State Senator (1970-86)
    Lieutenant Governor of Virginia (1986-90)
    Governor of Virginia (1990-94)
    Mayor of Richmond, Virginia (2005-09)
He had a ongoing feud with his state’s Democratic Senator, Chuck Robb.
He declared himself a candidate for the Democratic Presidential nomination (1991), but withdrew before the first primary.
During his brief campaign, he offered the insight, ‘The first black President will be a politician who is black.’
When he campaigned to change the Richmond city charter to allow for direct election of the mayor instead of having the city council choose a mayor from its ranks, he declared that he had no interest in running for mayor himself. He then became the first mayor elected under the new system.
He announced he would not endorse Barack Obama for re-election, attended a Mitt Romney fundraiser, then said he would be voting for Obama after all.
He was the grandson of slaves.
He was awarded a Bronze Star in the Korean War after he and two other men found themselves cut off from their unit and bluffed 19 Chinese soldiers into surrendering.
He was the first black governor since Reconstruction and the first African American elected governor of a state.
He turned out to be correct about the first black President.
