    Songs include 'Sam Stone,' 'Hello In There,' 'Donald and Lydia,' 'Christmas In Prison,' 'Dear Abby,' 'Speed of the Sound of Loneliness' and 'Angel from Montgomery'
    He said about an early job with the post office, 'You would accumulate sick pay by the hour working for the government. So when I would accumulate eight hours, I would get 'sick.' My medical record had everything from German flu to water on the knee.'
    Despite critical acclaim, he has had little commercial success.
    His voice was described by an admirer as a 'gruff monotone.'
    He was praised as a favorite songwriter by Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash and Kris Kristofferson.
    At the request of Poet Laureate Ted Kooser, he became the first singer/songwriter to perform at the Library of Congress (2005).
    He said, 'I've read things like 'He must have been really discouraged and really pissed off not being a star,' and that couldn't have been further from it.'
