    She and her husband were second cousins.

    She and her husband had no Spanish or Mexican blood.
    Despite this, Emperor Napoleon III offered them the throne of Mexico.
    She suffered a psychotic break while empress.
    She became convinced people were trying to poison her.
    She visited the Vatican and refused to leave. The pope let her sleep in the library, making it the only official time a woman stayed overnight at the Vatican.
    She lived the rest of her life in seclusion, with alternating periods of insanity.
    Her mother died when she was 10.
    She wrote poetry.
    She read Plutarch at 13.
    Her husband cheated on her with prostitutes and gave her an STD.
    She encouraged her husband to take the Mexican throne to give them something to do.
    She changed her name from Charlotte to Carlota to fit in better in Mexico.

    When Napoleon III abandoned Mexico, she traveled to Europe in an attempt to change his mind.
    Her husband was executed just three years into his reign.
    Reportedly, her husband's last words were, 'Poor Carlota.'
