    (August 16, 1902-July 4, 1974)
    Born in London, United Kingdom
Considered a pioneer of the historical romance
Titles include 'The Black Moth' (1921), 'The Masqueraders' (1928), 'The Convenient Marriage' (1934), 'Regency Buck' (1935), 'The Spanish Bride' (1940), 'Friday's Child' (1944), 'The Foundling' (1948), 'The Quiet Gentleman' (1951), 'Sylvester, or the Wicked Uncle' (1957), 'False Colours' (1963), 'Black Sheep' (1966) and 'Lady of Quality' (1972)
She smoked 60-80 cigarettes a day, but claimed not to inhale. (How Clintonesque.)
She refused to give interviews, calling publicity 'nauseating and quite unnecessary.'
Her attempt to turn herself into a limited liability company resulted in frequent clashes with the British tax authorities.
She said of one book, 'I think myself I ought to be shot for writing such nonsense.'
She began her first novel, 'The Black Moth,' as a serial story at 17 to amuse her brother Boris, who suffered from hemophilia.
While living with her husband in Macedonia, she almost died when a dentist administered anesthetic incorrectly (1928).
Her novels were popular escapism, especially during the Depression and World War II.
When publisher Max Reinhardt attempted to offer suggestions about the language in her latest novel, a member of his staff explained that no one in England knew more about Regency-era language than her.
